Case Study: Valerie is a current PhD student who recently accepted a post-doctoral fellowship at another university. The lab director for the fellowship has instructed her to bring samples of various biological reagents that she had produced during her PhD training so she could continue to further develop this area of her research. When Valerie sought the current lab director about this, she was told she could not have her samples and that she needed to leave her computer database and lab notebooks as well.

Question: How can Valerie ethically retain access to her dissertation research data and the biological samples that have been critical to her work? How should she respond to her current lab director's refusal to take her data and lab notebooks?
