Problem: After completing the readings and watching the videos, answer the following questions: Q1-What is a special offender as they relate to the prison environment? Why do special offenders require specialized treatment? Please feel free to provide an example of a special offender and the specialized treatment they may require while in prison to explain your answer. You are more than welcome to select one of the three "highlighted" types of special offenders from the videos, or any of the others from the chapter or that you can think of on your own. Q2-Select one or even two of the stories from the videos above and explore how you you believe you, as a Correctional Officer working in a jail or a prison, would work with that kind of special offender. Do they require specialized treatment? Do they require specialized oversight of their personal care, such as someone providing assistance with showering, dressing into clothing, feeding, etc.? How can this be accomplished in a jail or prison environment if these special offenders are housed with a violent inmate population? What about if you choose to discuss a pregnant inmate? What types of special needs would they require? Your discussion will center around the type of inmate you choose to explore. Q3-And finally, please comment on whether or not you've honestly ever thought about the special needs that women, mentally ill and elderly inmates require. I'm curious if this is a new topic for some/most of you, or if you've already explored these types of special offenders in other classes you've had at community college, here at Sac State or in any other university you may have attended. There is no judgment attached to this, of course. It's pure curiosity as discussing these special offenders is generally a brand new topic to the majority of my CRJ-130 students, which is great! That's what this class is meant to be all about--"fundamentals of corrections."
