Question: Erickson's fifth stage is identity versus role confusion which, according to the theory, occurs during ages 12-18 (remember though that, according to the theory, we can continue to struggle in this crisis throughout the lifespan).

During this stage, adolescents search for a sense of self and personal identity through an intense exploration of personal values, beliefs, and goals. Often this search for self involves exploring these values, beliefs and goals via relationships with others and experiences in larger society. By exploring relationships and the larger world, the quest to find identity prepares adolescents for knowing how they fit into society. Failure to establish a sense of identity within society ("I don't know what I want to be when I grow up") can lead to role confusion. Role confusion involves the individual not being sure about themselves or their place in society.

In the past three years, the world has been turned upside down due to the global pandemic. Most in-person social outlets for teens were shutdown and forced into an online environment. Discuss how you see this environment impacting teens and how it might impact the resolution of identity versus role confusion.
