Online discussion forum 1:
1. "The direct administration of involuntary treatment and containment by mental health nurses occurs within a professional philosophy that emphasizes inter- personal relationships and shared decision making (DH 2006, ACMHN 2010). Coercion and medical interventions are associated with perceptions of less satisfaction from service users with the therapeutic relationship (Browne and Lakeman 2014)." (Felton et al pg. 1138). How are therapeutic relationships affected by a culture of risk? How do we maintain or balance therapeutic relationships in such a practice culture?
Felton, A., Repper, J., & Avis, M. (2018). Therapeutic relationships, risk, and mental health practice International Journal of Mental Health Nursing, 27(3), 1137-1148.
2. Hrabe (2005) proposes that Peplau's theory is applicable to computer-mediated communication. How can we utilise Peplau's theories when faced with communication challenges demanded by infection control precautions (e.g. use of telehealth, protective equipment, social distancing) during the current COVID19 pandemic?
Hrabe, D.P. (2005), Peplau in cyberspace: an analysis of Peplau's Interpersonal Relations Theory and computer mediated communication. Issues in Mental Health Nursing, 26(4), 397-414.
Online discussion forum 2:
1. How can resilience be applied to help the mental health nurse to help their client? What does this mean for our practice?
Warelow, P., & Edward, K. (2007). Caring as a resilient practice in mental health nursing. International Journal of Mental Health Nursing, 16(2), 132-135.
2. Akerjordet and Severinsson (2010) suggest a "cautious optimism" with respect to applying emotional intelligence to nursing practice, particularly with respect to leadership. What do we understand and how do we related to the cautions in applying emotional intelligence to our practice?
Akerjordet, K. & Severinsson, E. (2010). The state of the science of emotional intelligence related to nursing leadership: an Integrative review: Journal of Nursing Management, 18: 363-382.
