Discussion Post: Mastering Language
Jim Powell writes in the article you are reading this week that "For centuries, people read Cicero because of his beautiful Latin prose."
For your initial forum post, think about other leaders in the world you have read about in history, or even leaders that you observe today. Then, answer these questions in your post: How did their use of language affect their rise to power? Are these powerful, educated people good leaders, or are some of them using their knowledge to be hurtful towards others? What is it about having a smooth tongue that impacts others enough to follow (and in some cases, blindly follow) someone? Can you think of leaders who have not had the ability to speak or write well? How has this impacted their leadership? What are qualities besides education that inspire people to follow someone?
When thinking about a leader's ability to speak, reflect on the life of Oral Roberts, the famous evangelist and founder of Oral Roberts University. For example, did you know that he was born with a severe stutter? His name was "Oral," but he had difficulty speaking! However, when God healed Oral of tuberculosis, his stutter went away as well. Through the healing touch of God, Oral was able to share Christ's light with the world! How do you think this miracle of healing his ability to speak impacted Oral Roberts' role as an evangelist?
Lastly, reflect on how education can help you personally to achieve God's purpose and call on your life. How can mastery of language or knowledge about certain topics impact how others learn and hear the message of Christ?
