Maslow's hierarchy of needs provide a useful framework for understanding how and why local products and brands can be extended beyond home-country borders. The essence of marketing is finding consumer needs and fulfilling them. As an individual fulfills needs at each level of the hierarchy, he or she progresses to the higher level. At the most basic level of human existence, physiological and safety needs must be met. Basic needs include that of food, clothing, shelter and other basic survival needs. Although the first two levels in Maslow's hierarchy are similar all over the world, the mid-level needs which include self-respect and self-esteem are different for different consumers in other countries.
