Mona, a 19-year-old of North Sudanese descent embarked on a new chapter 8 months ago when she arrived in Australia with her parents and younger brother with a UN Visa. A few months after her arrival Mona expressed a desire to pursue further education and decided to enrol in English as a Second Language (ESL) at TAFE. After a few weeks at TAFE, Mona's teacher observed the difficulties she was experiencing and referred her to the Indigo Community Services and Health Hub (Indigo) where you met Mona for the first time.
During your wellbeing assessment, Mona reveals that she is currently struggling at home. Her father has been diagnosed with a mental illness for which he has prescribed medication however when he does not take it, it can be harder to control his emotions, feelings, and actions. Mona also feels a sense of responsibility for taking care of her father whilst also managing her mother's expectations of completing housework duties. You learn that Mona is struggling to strike a balance between her busy schedule at TAFE, providing care for her father and helping her mother at home. She expresses that she finds happiness and joy in artistic expression, especially through painting and drawing so she tries to incorporate these therapeutic activities in her day as often as she can.
Although Mona has made efforts to form connections with her classmates at TAFE, she has not had much luck as many other students avoid interacting and engaging with her as they find it difficult to understand her. Additionally, as a Muslim who wears a hijab, she already feels isolated from her peers and her heightened anxiety is rooted in a distressing incident during her initial days at TAFE when a group of boys attempted to remove her hijab. Mona expresses her concerns about not fitting in with the other students and being unable to make new friends.
