An area that was once covered in fields of wildflowers was converted to a sprawling shopping plaza and parking lot. You are concerned for a local butterfly species, which is now restricted to a few patches of wildflower habitat left intact by the developers. These butterflies are rarely successful at navigating the paved landscape between habitat patches.

-Based on the image below, which butterfly population is most likely to go extinct? Justify your choice.

-How can habitat fragmentation lead to speciation?

-Based on what you learned of metapopulations, suggest a conservation measure to reduce

-The likelihood of any of these patches going extinct. If this conservation measure was implemented, would the likelihood of speciation increase, decrease, or stay the same? Explain.
