Why are compassion and kindness important in health care? How can a Health Care Manager cultivate a culture of compassion and kindness within a department or organization?

Initial Post: Compassion is recognizing that someone or something is suffering or in pain, showing concern and worry for that person or thing, and then taking action to help. Whereas, kindness is defined as a person who is selfless, generous, helpful and someone who thinks of other people's feelings. Both compassion and kindness are important in the healthcare industry. Seeing as patients who are cared for with compassion feel safe. Additionally, when healthcare workers are compassionate patients feel capable of building a trusting relationship allowing for better patient care. Moreover, compassionate healthcare workers provide much needed emotional support. Receiving bad news affects the patient both emotionally and physically. With the emotional support system provided by healthcare members, it can strengthen a patient's will to survive or fight. Kindness is also important in healthcare for many reasons. The first reason kindness is important in healthcare is because it allows healthcare workers to more effectively address the patient's needs. Another reason kindness is essential in healthcare is if a patient for example doesn't have a family or is unable to visit like if this specific person was quarantined, a healthcare worker gives the patient someone to talk to. Lastly, kindness goes a long way when healthcare workers take time to explain tests, procedures, medicine, and recovery, and answer all of the questions the patient may have. When healthcare workers take time explaining such aspects a patient feels important and is not left to wonder about any aspect of their treatment. Healthcare managers can cultivate a culture of compassion and kindness within a department or organization by recognizing and then rewarding healthcare workers for compassion and kindness, providing training to acquire and develop such skills, and finally creating an environment that encourages others to show compassion and kindness.
