Assignment:
Meet Mercedes Mercedes made the commitment to her internship from deep in her heart: She wanted to work with students in a middle school in the state where her family recently relocated. the internship site was arranged; she was delighted with the interview and had no concerns about the setting. two weeks after beginning her internship, one of the students she was getting to know through her work in the Resource Room was called to the vice principal's office. Mercedes was shocked, angry, and overwhelmed to watch the child being struck with a wooden paddle as punishment for his behavior.
This is 2018, she thought. How can a child be disciplined by corporal punishment? What Mercedes didn't realize is that in her new state of residence, it is legal. For that matter, corporal punishment is legal in 19 states in the United States, and "Black children, boys, and children with disabilities are subjected to corporal punishment with greater frequency than their peers" (Society for Research in child development, 2016). Mercedes' dream placement had just become a nightmare. this is a "what if" that she had never thought about. it's something that she "didn't know she didn't know.
How would you advise Mercedes to take back her dream? What are her next steps? Before answering that question, think about her situation in terms of the four guiding questions: What? So What? Now What? Then What?
