Question

You are a nurse in a busy emergency room. A patient walks into the ED disoriented and agitated. The triage nurse suspects the patient to be under the influence of drugs and alcohol and designates the patient low priority. Nearly an hour passes and you pass by the ER lobby and notice a patient in the waiting room is lethargic and unresponsive. You see the patient has a medical ID bracelet on stating the patient is a diabetic. The patient's blood sugar has reached critically low levels. This is the same patient deemed low priority by the triage nurse who presumed the patient to be under the influence. How would you act on this situation? Describe in a short paragraph how bias can effect judgement and cause ethical dilemmas when providing care for patients in a healthcare setting?
