Case Study: How Best to contribute public good: Government or Nonprofit?
Cole Ledford was a sophomore at Ohio State and was majoring in political science. He was excited about the internship he got in the Ohio legislature until he got to the capital in Columbus. What he learned surprised him
" I thought I wanted to be one of them," he told a reporter for USA today. After his internship experience, however, he found "it was more that politics was a game they wanted to play, and it wasn't about the constituents." His goal was to "give back an influence the world." He's decided to do that by switching his major to nonprofit management and by focusing instead on working for a charitable organization.
Ledford isn't alone. A 2013 poll showed that Americans want to make a difference, but by a margin of more than two to one, they believe that the best way to do so is through charities and volunteer organizations, not through the government. The gap is especially large for those under thirty. Just one in five of those surveyed said they trusted the government as an advocate (42 percent) or an adversary (38 percent) for them and their family.
John F.Kennedy, in his famous 1961 inaugural address, raised a clear call: "Ask not what your county can do for you- ask what you can do for your country" Many of today's Americans want to do something for their country, But as Kelsey Gallagher from Ohio State put it, "Working at a nonprofit or doing community service, you get more of a first-hand experience." She concluded, "you get to see the direct effects".

2. Why do you think there is less trust in government and a greater do you think there is less trust in government and a greater tendency to think of government as an "adversary"
3. What steps can be taken to reverse this trend? Can it be reversed?
