The Digital Divide is indeed widespread. It demonstrates the divide between those who are savvy in the ways of information systems in much the same way as the Roman Church during its dominance in Western Europe. That is, all science, law, theology, medicine, and even the worship services were in Latin. In other words the great mass of people were not able to understand what the learned, and the literate were suggesting. They were speaking a whole different language. As Florid suggests there is both a vertical and a horizontal dimension to the Digital Divide: The vertical denotes the past, and a shift from the Modern Era to the Information Age beginning about 1950, and the Horizontal which denotes "insiders" from "outsiders."

Currently we can see this divide playing out as schools seek to expand on-line, hybrid systems to whole bodies of students from Elementary to High School to College, which is exposing this divide very sharply.

How are to address this reality in our era?
