Question: The concept of Kleos is very important to understand when reading The Iliad. "Kleos," roughly translated means "everlasting glory."

In Greek life, the Gods played an important role as judges. A normal human, upon his or her death, was sent to the realm of the dead (the underworld) where existence was dull and meaningless. However, if a mortal gained enough glory "kleos" (fame among the Gods?) he or she might be invited to dwell in Mount Olympus. Needless to say, the Greeks often acted and died trying to gain kleos.
