While watching the film. Accidental Hero, use this sheet to jot down your reactions, notes, and answers in draft form.
Question A. How are the life situations from the pieces supposed to make the audience feel? What do the students do "nonverbally" to arouse these feelings? Give SEVERAL SPECIFIC examples of looks, gestures, movements that you see in a particular duo or two- explain and describe what you are seeing.
Question B. Talk a bit about intensity. The wording and the emotions within a presentation can create certain levels of intensity. Choose one presentation and discuss the intensity level in that performance. Tell us what words were said and how did those particular words affect the intensity level. Why do you think that occurred?
Question C. On average, how long does it take these students to perfect a "piece"? How does this compare to the amount of time you take. Name several general areas in prepping for a speech? Which practice makes the presentation and the speaker better?
Question D. Tommie's program provides a model for success. 99% of his students go on to college. Why do you think this program affects them so much more than standard high school classes? What skills do public speaking, and in particular forensic classes, teach these students? 1) Discuss both life (can be used at any time in life) skills and 2) presentation (the more formal skills taught in public speech, etc.) skills.
Question E. Many speakers (esp. young speakers) would shy away from speaking about controversial topics such as alcoholism, abuse, homelessness, teen suicide and racism. What is it about discussing these topics as "interpretations" or "drama" that seems to make more of an impact? Why do you think Tommie chooses these topics for his students?
