There are several types of stratification. Among the most common are stratification by gender, race, ethnicity, age, and social class.

Be substantive and clear, and use examples to reinforce your ideas.

It can be difficult to be empathetic until we have walked in someone else's shoes. This week we will do that. Assume the role of someone from a different race, gender, ethnicity, age, or social class, and discuss how they are affected by stratification. The following are some examples:

•How are senior citizens treated in a youth-oriented society? Are older people made to feel that they no longer have a valuable place in society?

•What about the young, unmarried girl with a new baby trying to get to work? She does not have a car and must use public transportation. Her employer does not provide maternity leave, so she must work to provide food for her baby. What would her day be like?
