"Sex, Lies, and Conversation"
Communication and Gender Studies
Again an essay about gender is destiny. The assumption is that the genetic makeup of a man is different from that of a woman based upon studies of communication patterns.
Silence and talking mean different things to men than they do to women. Her work and the work of other who promote genetic gender differences is always critiqued and attacked on the grounds of stereotyping all women and attributing similar qualities to them denying each her individuality and difference."Declaration of Sentiments and Resolution" p.581
This is a relatively old essay which addresses suffrage of women and political inequities in the early feminist era when women didn't have their political rights. The interest in this essay is not only historical but also in the analysis of distribution of power patterns and the meaning of equality and how it progressed throughout the years.
In the past equality meant equality among men of different economic and social status and a certain race.
The term broadened to include women and other races. "How to Escape from a Bad Date" p. 291
This is a humorous piece based on a different perception of male/female relationship. It is a younger piece that talks about dating and the games that men and women play to attract or for that matter to repel and to get rid of unwanted attention.
It is based on the modern perception of equality and equal mental abilities between men and women. Both are capable of deceiving and hurting one another. I find it particularly interesting that the dating partners always revert to lying rather than honestly acknowledging lack of interest. One wonders if this insistence on lying is to protect feelings from being hurt or to inflict more pain or to avoid confrontation so it is done with the selfish purpose of self preservation. What do you all think?
How are men and women portrayed in this week's selection? If women and men are essentially different how can equality be made possible? Can there be a gender-free society?Do you think a gender free society will be a better one?
