Topic: Organization and Democracy: Mary Follett's Application of Theory to Practice (Be sure to follow the formatting instructions that are given in the course syllabus.)
Mary Follett's social, organizational, and political theory focuses upon "group organization" as being "the solution of popular government." The phrase "the solution of popular government" implies that there is a "problem" to be solved. In your essay you should answer these three questions:
- What is the "problem" that Follett proposes to solve through group organization?
- What is her "solution" to that problem?
- How are individuals, groups, and organizations structurally related to each other in creating or building Follett's "solution of popular government"?
Before writing the essay in which you answer the above questions, you should be clear in understanding Follett's theoretical formulation of the ideas of
(1) The individual, group process, and the collective will;
(2) The failures and problems of "Traditional Democracy;"
(3) "Democracy's method" as operative in the neighborhood setting; and
(4) The nature of pluralism, as a theory, as it applies to the occupational group.
