Problem: Nursing

When completing the problem, I saw many areas of strength and improvement. My score was a 27. Areas of strength for me were using CIS systems to document interventions and providing ethical standards for data security. In my current hospital there is a focus upon documentation and confidentiality. Since I work in D.C., many public individuals may be in my care and it is my duty to keep their information confidential. An area that needed the most attention was utilizing safeguards and decision making tools. In my line of work, most of the decisions are pre-planned. For example, what pain medication to give for a certain pain score. So, many decisions are made for me.

In the text, I learned that my strengths were due to having computer literacy. Our reading described this term as having the knowledge and skills to operate a computer and its operating systems such as spreadsheets (Chamberlain, 2024). Computer literacy is not an optional skill in nursing. It is required to ensure patient safety and attitudes are changing about its importance. In fact, when studied, nurses who were taught computer literacy in school and obtained a bachelors degree were more likely to have a better attitude towards utilizing computers (Brumini et. al, 2005).

I believe taking this course will help me improve my knowledge of informatics. I believe it is a newer field that I am interesting in learning more of. Questions that I have are regarding the use of AI in nursing. I am just seeing some students utilizing AI in schools and I wonder how that will translate in nursing. I wonder how the AACN essentials of workflow and protecting patient data will be utilized in AI. We shall see!
