Choose a particular genre of art (music, theater, film, television, comedy/satire, literature, painting, photography, etc.) and provide a thesis-based argument about its current role in contemporary American society. Using at least one specific American art work of the 21st century (2000-2021), as well as earlier 20th and/or 19th century works of the genre as examples and illustrations, analyze how the genre has evolved from its past forms to address societal issues in America today.
The thesis (main argument or claim) of your essay should make a specific case for how contemporary art works of the genre express a theme we've touched on during the semester. Ideally, your essay will address how the entire genre of art reflects, comments on, rebels against, or satirizes elements in current American society by discussing, explicating, and analyzing individual works of art as illustrations and examples of the genre you choose.
Possible topics and themes might include:
• How a traditional art form/genre evolved from earlier forms through advances in technology or changes in American society
• How the genre accepts or rejects current societal norms or cultural standards
• How the genre of art deals with or reflects tensions in race, gender, or class
• How the genre of art reflects the realities, joys, or suffering of its audience
• How the genre of art defines or comments on what it is to be an American
Feel free to choose any genre (and specific works within it) you feel comfortable and passionate about exploring in depth, and focus your choices around a specific social issue or theme to show how it has evolved through art over time. You should analyze at least three art works in some detail. You may choose works discussed in the readings or Weekly Worksheets, but feel free to select other works you are familiar with to provide specific examples and illustrations to back up your case.
