Family Systems

Understanding family styles, there are many different layers of each section. Each style has benefits and drawbacks. There is no perfect way to parent. However, learning each style can be beneficial to addressing any issues a child may be having or even yourself as an adult. Each distinctive style is responsible for how a person views themselves and how they fit into this world. Our confidence or lack thereof starts forming before we can even know what the word means. (Morin, 2022)

There are four distinct styles;

Authoritarian Parenting; Exactly as it says in its name, authority. This style is most rigid, rules need to be followed. Punishment if things are not done correctly and up to standards. As adults their personalities tend to be more aggressive with lower self-confidence.

Permissive Parenting; This style tends to be more passive, no real consequences to unruly behavior, no follow through when or if any rules are set, as adults they tend to have low self-esteem, little regard for authority. Also have been known to have difficulty with academics.

Uninvolved Parenting; As it sounds, this is a parent that has no interest or knowledge in the child's daily activities. There tend to be little rules. Having an uninvolved parent does not mean it is on purpose, there can be many reasons, work, school, or even worst-case drug issues. As adults' low confidence is a result. With little happiness in their lives.

Authoritative Parenting; This is the ideal parenting style that has the greatest benefit for the child and as they turn into adults. This style has rules and consequences coupled with healthy affection and support, as adults they tend to have higher self-esteem giving them the confidence to be successful and happy adults. (Morin, 2022) Parenting styles are also influenced by culture and regions. Different areas in the world view proper amounts of affection and rules differently. Socioeconomic status will reflect parenting styles. As an example, lower income socioeconomic status is typically higher stressed with concerns of funding basic needs such as eating leaving less room for healthy affection. (Kail & Cavanaugh, 2022, p. 233)

In a lot of cases parents will dip into each style with a prominence in one. My personal experience was with all styles, my father was a police officer so I can safely say the most involved was the authoritarian style. Having the mix of all four, I never felt unloved or ignored. Consequences were always observed when rules were not followed. As a parent myself, I see I followed along the same footsteps as my parents, however I was a young parent and parented out of guilt more than I personally experienced, making the wrong choice often not wanting to hurt my child's feelings. Personally, I reacted to the now rather than thinking how this would affect my son in the future.
