Case Study
Chapter Overview
The introduction outlines VSC fundamentals, their grid impact, study goals, and the importance of grid-forming converters. The investigation examines Grid-Connected Voltage Source Converters (VSCs), focusing on voltage and frequency control, control the active and reactive power injection, fault ride-through, renewable energy integration, and the role of Grid Forming Converters. MATLAB Simulink models are employed to evaluate their impact on grids and validate against predetermined objectives. Specifically designed for autonomous operation without relying on the primary grid, grid-forming converters aim to address issues faced by grid-following converters in weak grid scenarios. These issues include dynamic voltage stability and observed low-frequency oscillations. This study aims to explore the operational characteristics of grid-forming converters within weak grid scenarios. It conducts an analysis of their performance under weak grid conditions, identifying operational limits during steady- state conditions. The findings reveal reduced steady-state operation limits for grid-forming converters compared to grid-following converters.
Model -A
The Integration of a VSC into an AC Transmission Network. The Voltage Source Converter has connected at one of the Bus at Grid and the case study will be for the dq current control loops to control the active and reactive power injection at the Bus C by the Grid Connected VSC. The idea for the reference model has taken from Advanced AC and DC Transmission System (MMH624490) Tri-B 2022-2023 Coursework 1 -Part B.
Results/Analysis
It has been noted that by really adjusting the Id and Iq current parameters, active and reactive power may be able to change the voltage between the buses. In short, we're examining how these converters behave in real life, testing how stable they are with different power strengths, and seeing how a particular control method changes their performance.
