Problem
The Farmer in the Dell, the Temperate Forest, the Desert, the Rainforest, etc, (not the tundra!)
Recently we have studied the broad category of human niche anthropologists call "horticulture." This type of human adaptation includes considerable variation, which we explored in lecture and readings. For this problem you have two options, so pick one of them:
Option I: Discuss (i.e., describe and explain) two examples of how the ecology of horticulture varies in different environments (how environment influences horticultural practices and the societies that practice horticulture, and how horticultural practices affect the environment). Obviously you can't discuss everything, so focus on just a few or even one particular aspect(s) of human ecology that you think are particularly important or interesting. Option II: Choose one of the specific cultures we have studied through lectures and readings. Discuss (i.e., describe and explain) how a particular change in the natural or cultural environment (your choice) might affect that culture. Again, since you can't discuss everything and still write a coherent essay, focus on just a few or even one particular aspect(s) of human ecology that you think are particularly important or interesting.
Some of the topics you might address include but are not limited to:
Sustainability, cultivation and fallow periods, varieties of crops environmental challenges or critical factors
Local settlement-related effects on environments
Carrying capacity (how many people can live on a given area of land) population density and/or distribution
Social organization (e.g., hierarchical or egalitarian, division of labor, family structure, resource ownership) stability, biodiversity, flexibility/adaptability, energy flow, forest succession, surplus production, division of labor, settlement patterns, social hierarchy, technology
