Next, apply Locke's theory to a specific contemporary debate regarding Governmental Coercion - that is, carefully consider how a Lockean should side in a specific contemporary issue. Be sure to carefully weigh all the considerations that would matter to giving a Lockean analysis of the problem (what are the relevant rights involved, and what is the proper role of government in this situation?).

Finally, argue whether the Lockean analysis you gave is correct - in one of the two following ways.

Option 1: If you think Locke's theory gets it right, then give Locke's arguments (using your debate as an example) for why the government should be restricted to interpreting and enforcing our Natural Rights. Be sure to at least consider a serious objection to your conclusion.

Option 2: If you think the Lockean analysis is wrong, then give arguments that it is wrong, using your debate as an example (e.g., argue that there is reason for government action grounded in Millian Utilitarianism or Contractarianism. That is, argue that Locke's theory ignores considerations that should play a role in determining whether governmental coercion is justified).
