Case Study ~ Kelly
Kelly is an eight-year-old cisgender girl who is of Black and white descent. Three years ago, Kelly's mother discovered that her then partner (white heterosexual cisgender male) had sexually abused kelly . She discovered this when looking through their shared computer when she came across the recordings of this abuse. She then went to the police who found further online content. kelly was then interviewed by police several times and video recorded so that she did not have to be interviewed more than necessary. kelly at the time talked about the encounters in neutral or positive ways - as she thought it was a game that they (the now-ex partner) were playing. kelly's mother tried very hard to not show her intense emotions to kelly but at times would start to cry and talk about what had happened. The ex-partner was arrested, charged, and imprisoned.
Kelly now attends school and presents as quite withdrawn. She will not talk to any adults directly. She will talk to other children, usually female identified children. She does not like to draw or do any artwork. At home, she refuses to use the computer or watch television. She is often found reading, drawing, or lost in her imagination. She sometimes wakes up at night screaming but then cannot tell her mother what she dreamt of or why she is crying. She can quietly do her homework and is able to achieve high marks. When she gets less than perfect, she can become very upset but does not want to display her emotions to anyone - rather, she will hide in her room and refuse to come out.
Question: You are the CYCP assigned to work with kelly in the home environment. Please talk about kelly's story and how you would approach your work with her using the following themes from the readings: Shame and blame, recording the abuse, disclosure, invasion of privacy, and failure to protect - as well as - how a lack of control, permanence, and surveillance/ongoing threat of the gaze impacts these dynamics. How do these themes help you understand kelly and her back story (assessment)? How do these themes inform how you will work with her in the home and possibly the school environment (intervention)?
