The ego develops defense mechanisms to deal with the Id's primitive impulses, warnings, the expectations of the superego, and the realities of the real world. Defense mechanisms are designed to ward off unacceptable id impulses that are at odds with superego standards or that would result in real-world problems. They have four primary characteristics: (1) they are automatic; (2) they are unconscious; (3) they ward off unacceptable impulses; and (4) they distort reality. For practical purposes, a defense mechanism is used to protect your feelings in various situations, like a bulletproof vest for your senses. Your book explains defense mechanisms and provides examples in Table 2.1, Ego Defense Mechanisms.
