Sarah is 32 and has 2 children, Kyle 10 and Neville 8. She's had an 'on again off again' relationship with the children's father Darryn for nearly 10 years. Darryn perpetrated verbal, emotional, financial, sexual and physical on Sarah from a year into their relationship.
Sarah has been hospitalised as a result of the violence a number of times.
Sarah's children were removed by Child
Protection because they were 'at significant risk of harm' from the violence. Sarah was told that she was 'not taking enough responsibility' for her children's safety since she 'couldn't guarantee that the children would be safe'.
The children currently live with Sarah's mother who has asked Sarah not to contact them as it is 'too disruptive'.
When Sarah was growing up she experienced violence from her father. Sarah has been referred to you for counselling and group work to improve her parenting, communication, stress management, self-esteem and to learn how to develop safe relationships. How would you use theory to explain the situation Sarah is in, and what theory or approach would you use to inform your practice?
