Activity 1 - Applying Motivation Theories
You are a consultant who has been asked by a large hospital to assist with lowering patient injury rates within the hospital. Hospital management is concerned that injury rates are rising, and that much of this is due to the staff's lack of motivation to attend to the problem.
Negative publicity is being generated about the hospital's performance. Hospital management is looking for ways to motivate staff to reduce injuries.
Step 1
Choose a motivation theory ( or integrate a few) from the lecture (e.g., Operant Conditioning Theory, Maslow's Need Hierarchy Theory, Herzberg's Two-factor Theory, Job Characteristics Model, Equity theory, Goal Setting Theory)
Step 2
Think about how you could apply this theory to address the above problem.
i.e., how could this theory help you come up with some ways to motivate the hospital workers to reduce injury rates?
Step 3
Formulate a recommendation to present to the hospital team (should be about 100 words)
Step 4
Present this recommendation to the class
Activity 2 - The Puzzle of Motivation
Watch the following TED Talk by Dr Dan Pink "The puzzle of motivation"
In groups, discuss the following questions:
- What did you think of the original results of the candle study?
- What are some examples of intrinsic motivators?
- What is the ‘mismatch' that Dr Pink refers to throughout the presentation?
- What is an example of a job that could utilise the ROWE model well? Why?
- What about a job where the ROWE model wouldn't work? Why?
