The Outcomes, or the results of the Socialization that you received growing up affects who you are today. Having an awareness of your personal socialization history can enlighten for you why you believe and behave the way that you do, and give you insights and enable you to re-evaluate these influences. These are some of the results of socialization:
Values (qualities or beliefs seen as desirable or important)
Microsystem influences the internalization of values
Example: parents beliefs about money, work, spirituality, succeeding
Social events impart values
Example:1930s - thrifty-ness
1940s - patriotism
1950s - materialism, 1960s - critical thinking
Attitudes (tendencies to react positively or negatively to certain situations, objects or persons)
Attitudes may develop through:
Instructions (tell a child he cannot play with another child because of
Religious background
modeling (showing concern when someone gets hurt)
direct experience (playing with a child with cerebral palsy)
Motives (needs that cause people to act a certain way) and Attributes (explanation for performance)
Self Esteem (the value individuals place on their identity)
Interactions with parents, peers, and significant adults who communicate approval, validation, and support make children view themselves as competent, and worthy.
Domains: physical, academic, behavior, social competences.
Self Regulation/Behavior( self control, how ones acts or does)
Hope to develop prosocial, or helpful behavior, instead of antisocial
Socialization methods associated with prosocial behavior are attachment (warmth) instruction (clear rules), reasoning (discussion of standards), modeling, and learning by doing (participation in activities that involve helping and cooperating)
Socialization methods associated with antisocial behavior are rejection, punishment, and group pressure
Morals (an individuals evaluation of what is right and wrong)
Moral development involves:
an emotional component (guilt, shame, empathy)
a cognitive component (reasoning such as conceptualizing right and wrong and decision making)
a behavioral component (actions)
cultural and social experiences contribute to moral perspectives
