Assignment:
1. Based on its founding missions, history, and evolution as reviewed in this course so far, write an objective initial statment on how would you define:
- Homeland Security as a policy area?
- Homeland Security as a field of advanced academic study?
- Refer and compare your proposed definition to relevant policy and strategy documents and critical thinking and research publications discussed in the course so far.
2. Select one of the current homeland security core missions as established in the QHSR as a topic for your paper. There is a myriad of issues implied in these.
Alternatively, select any one of the four principal goals of DHS that guide and unify the nation's homeland security efforts; the legal basis for homeland security; executive branch policies and strategies; or homeland security plans and programs.
3. Choose a state and summarize what the expected scope of possible DSCA mission support activity could be in major disasters or terror attacks affecting your state. What would you recommend your governor to consider in particular regarding defense support of civil authorities in his/her state? How are DSCA-based homeland defense activities distinguished from homeland security activities?
4. Write a statement of your assessment of this practical information and recommendations in the light of the information and examples from this lesson, address:
a. the insight into individual awareness and preparedness, psychological foundations of risk perception, and risk communication that you have gained in this course so far;
b. the elements of experiencing a disaster and the relevance of personality factors as addressed in this lesson;
c. a conclusion to what extent you agree/disagree with the practical information and recommendations, based on your so-far coursework.
5. Conduct research on two sets of disaster experiences:
a. A chronic disaster of extended (of failed) recovery. You may use the TMI case for this matter, since some argue that it qualifies as a chronic disasters, see TMI@36 conference documentation website - presentations, or you may choose your own chronic disaster.
b. A one-time disaster, using one of the cases addressed in this lesson's required course book reading (Response to Disaster: Psychological, Community and Ecological Approaches, Chapters 1 and 2).
In your analysis, focus on two or three aspects of the trauma experience discussed of the course book reading.
Write up a statement summer summary report of your research, analyzing the different and similar themes across descriptions of psychological trauma associated with the two sets of experiences. Add you assessment of the consequences for effective coping as a step towards achieving societal resilience!
