HLTAID011 Provide First Aid
Case Study 1 - Unconscious Infant
Write "N/A" if no contextualisation has been done in this task.
CONTEXTUALISATION
PRIVACY AND CONFIDENTIALITY REQUIREMENTS
1. Recognise the emergency situation.
2. Follow the DRSABCD action plan by assessing the scene for hazards.
Are there any hazards to yourself?
• Are there any hazards to Anna?
• Are there any hazards to Gabriel?
Are there any hazards to Eve?
• Are there any hazards to the casualty?
If you replied ‘yes' to any of the previous questions, what is the risk associated with each hazard you identified?
For each risk identified, identify one strategy to minimise the risk.
3. Follow the DRSABCD action plan by assessing the casualty and determining if they are conscious, breathing, or have a pulse.
This is demonstrated by:
• Gently squeezing casualty's shoulders
• Touching or tapping on cheek
• Asking the casualty (or their caregiver) if they are okay
4. Assess the casualty and determine if there is a need for first aid response.
5. Follow the DRSABCD action plan by seeking assistance from emergency response services.
6. Obtain consent from medical emergency services to apply appropriate emergency first aid procedures.
7. Obtain consent from the casualty's parent/caregiver to apply appropriate emergency first aid procedures.
8. Follow the DRSABCD action plan by laying the casualty flat on the ground and checking the casualty's mouth for obstruction.
9. Follow the DRSABCD action plan by checking the casualty's breathing. This is demonstrated by:
• Looking for normal movement of the chest or upper abdomen
• Listening for normal breath sounds
• Feeling for regular, rhythmic movement of chest or upper abdomen
10. Follow the DRSABCD action plan by performing at least two minutes of uninterrupted CPR (five cycles of compressions and ventilations) on the infant manikin on a firm surface.
This is demonstrated by:
• Beginning CPR with 30 compressions at a rate of 100-120 compressions per minute.
• Compressions must be done using two fingers on the middle of the infant's chest and pressing the breastbone approximately 1/3 depth of the chest (4 cm).
• Delivering rescue breaths by sealing their mouth over the infant's mouth and nose and giving two gentle puffs of air using just enough pressure to cause the chest to gently rise and fall.
• For every 30 compressions, the candidate must give two rescue breaths.
• Continue compressions and ventilations until five cycles have been completed.
11. Obtain consent from the casualty's parent/caregiver and then place the casualty in the recovery position. Placing the casualty in the recovery position is demonstrated by:
• Kneeling beside the casualty who is lying down and placing their far arm out at right angles to the body.
• Bending the casualty's nearest arm at the elbow and placing it across the chest with the fingers close to the far shoulder.
• Bending the nearest leg up at right angles to the body.
• Gently pushing the nearest shoulder and the bent knee to roll the casualty gently on their side away from them (the candidate), ensuring that one knee is kept at right angles and that it is touching the ground.
• Resting the casualty's uppermost bent arm across the straight arm and under their chin.
12. Monitor the casualty's condition by:
• Checking for a pulse after defibrillation
• Checking for signs of breathing after defibrillation
13. Report the details of the incident to their supervisor in line with the reporting procedure outlined in the Reporting Requirements section
above.
14. Maintain privacy of information in line with organisational policies outlined in the Privacy and Confidentiality
Requirements section above.
15. Maintain confidentiality of information in line with organisational policies outlined in the Privacy and Confidentiality Requirements section above.
16. Maintain privacy of information in line with the pieces of legislation outlined in the Privacy and Confidentiality Requirements section above.
17. Maintain confidentiality of information in line with the pieces of legislation outlined in the Privacy and Confidentiality Requirements section above.
