HLSC120 Indigenous Health and Culture - Australian Catholic University
Presentation - This assessment item enables students to learn through reflection and application of knowledge related to health and culture. In addition, it promotes skills in developing and presenting information, and time management.
Task: This is an Oral Presentation exploring the strengths of Indigenous Australians. This semester, the person is Joyce Clague.
Provide a brief summary of Clague's biography, including at least one social determinant that might have impacted her as a child.
Clague was born in the segregation era of policy. Discuss how segregation might have influenced Clague.
Describe at least one social determinant Clague has helped to improve in the broader Indigenous community.
Criterion 1: Accurate biographical summary that incorporates at least one social determinant that impacted Clague in her childhood.
It's important to provide a brief background about the person. You will need to know enough biographical information about Clague to be able to identify the social determinants that impacted her. To do this well, you'll also need to know about the society she grew up in at that time - what was it like for an Aboriginal woman at that time, in that place?
There's no need to give us a long series of facts about the person - that doesn't answer the question.
Criterion 2: Accurate description of the segregation era of policy. Discusses how this might have influenced Clague.
You need to accurately describe the segregation era of policy. Do some research on what was happening in Australia and the world around that time. Also, research what Australian society was like during that time, particularly where Clague grew up. The biographical information you gather and the facts about the era Clague was born into are there to help you understand how the era influenced her as an adult.
Criterion 3: Describes at least one social determinant Clague has helped to improve in the broader Indigenous community.
Get to know the list of the social determinants of health specific to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people from module 4. Look at Clague's work and achievements to discover where/ how she has helped to improve one of those social determinants for many or all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
Criterion 4: Clarity and creativity of presentation.
Be as creative as you can while making sure the information is clear to the marker. Make sure any writing on your slides is clear and easy to read. When you've finished, download your PPT to a USB and open it on a different computer to check how it looks and sounds. You can use the library computers to do this. Remember: if we can't see or hear your work clearly, we can't give you marks for it.
Criterion 5: Accesses and uses academic standard information ethically and legally.
You will need to use non-academic sources for the biographical information. Please use academic sources to discuss the era of policy, the social determinants of health, and Clague's impact on the broader community. If you're not sure how to do this, the librarians and Academic Skills Unit can help you. Be sure to include citations for the information and also for any graphics on the slides. Your final slide(s) will be your reference list. Again, please make the writing large enough to see, legibility is important, it's ok to use as many slides as needed for your reference list.
