Mary is a 20 year old college student who presents to your office with complaint of difficulty hearing for the past week. When you enter the exam room she is wearing "ear buds" and talking on her cell phone. She reports that she was treated for an ear infection about 3 weeks ago while at home on Spring Break. At that time she reported cough, congestion and a low-grade fever which has since resolved, but some occassional ear pain has persisted. She has noticed a small amount of drainage and a feeling of "fullness" in her R ear that she describes as constant and worse since her flight back to school. She admits to trying to use Q-tips to clean her ears without much success, and no other treatments have been tried. She denies any new injury or trauma, but provides a history of several ear infections in the past.
