Question
The history of the public housing development in St. Louis known as Pruitt-Igoe is tense and complicated. In the span of just two decades - from 1954 to 1974 - this massive residential complex went from being a place of hope - a "proud symbol of St. Louis's rebirth" - to a site of fear, crime, poverty, and devastation. In your essay, you should explore the structural, architectural, political, financial, economic, regulatory, administrative, and social processes that shaped the lives of Pruitt-Igoe residents - both in terms of their opportunities and their challenges. In other words, explore the multitude of factors that contributed to the rise of Pruitt-Igoe (and public housing more broadly) as a positive symbol of change as well as the factors that contributed to the decline and decay of Pruitt- Igoe (and public bousing more broadly). Be sure to include the experiences and attitudes of former residents in your discussion about the promise and peril of public housing in the United States.Instructions:Students are required to watch two documentaries, both of which can be accessed by going to Course Schedule, Week 11, on our Black board site.
