Question

This client is a 2-year-old female child with a history of obstructive hydrocephalus and had a ventricular shunt placed 1 year ago with no issues. For the past three days the child has been febrile and brought to the pediatrician for evaluation. She was transported to the hospital via ambulance for fluid resuscitation and observation. The emergency medical technician placed a peripheral intravenous (IV) catheter in the left-hand during transport.
