Question

A patient with a family history of Hirschsprung's disease is seen in the outpatient clinic to determine if he has this disease as well. Hirschsprung's is a congenital absence of ganglion nerve cells in the plexus that innervates the colon and rectum to relax the internal anorectal sphincter. The manometric probe is inserted into the rectum to measure the internal and external anal sphincter muscles and rectal reflexes and sensations.
