History of Globalization

In Chapter IV (Section: The Emergence of a World Economy) and Chapter V, the authors discuss globalization from 1870-1900, which was the Gilded Age in America. Some economists have referred to the modern era as America's Second Gilded Age, in part due to the impacts of globalization. A 2011 Congressional Budget Report found that in the U.S., the "400 richest people in the country control more wealth than the bottom 50 percent of households, and the U.S. ranks alongside countries like Uganda, Cameroon, Ecuador and Rwanda in terms of the gap between its richest and poorest citizens."

Main Post

  1. Discuss three points the authors make about globalization in this historical period.
  2. Identify a similarity between globalization's impact from 1870-1900 and our modern era. Include a source (with full citation) beyond our course text to develop your answer.

The textbook being used is Globalization, a short history. Jurgen Osterhammel and Niels P. Peterson.
