Question

A 23-year-old female presents for an appointment at the university's student health center. The student has a history of endometriosis. The associated pain is being successfully managed with progestin-only contraception medication therapy. The student's medical history also includes diagnoses of schizophrenia and myopia. The symptoms associated with schizophrenia are being managed with lumateperone therapy. The student is under the care of an optometrist. The student has recently enrolled in classes working toward a degree in accounting. Student states, "Leaving family and friends is hard, but I'm so excited to be out on my own and taking classes here." The student adds, "Having schizophrenia is a challenge; I don't want my roommates and new friends to think I'm different. It's so important for me to do well and succeed. I wouldn't allow anything get in my way." The student is on medication to manage her chronic health conditions but she states a concern that "medication is expensive and the side effects can be hard to deal with."
