Topic - regarding the life and contributions of someone in the history of data analysis and statistics
The topic is regarding the life and contributions of someone in the history of data analysis and statistics. You can choose a person from any time, long ago or recent. It could concern someone who developed a method or test, or someone who contributed to some major data analysis in various topics. People contributed to theory, applications, or anything interesting in data analysis are good choices.
A good way to choose a person is to scan the lists of people in history, and then use the uleth.ca/lib search tools (they can explain, if you ask them, or me) or even use Google and Google Scholar, to start.
You should include, in writing that would be like an article for the public or for other students,
- when and where the person lived
- what kind of data or statistics the person you chose worked on
- how it affected the development of data analysis we use now, or provided some alternatives
- some (at least a few) references at the end of your essay to show what they wrote, and where you found out about them
If you are unsure of your writing quality or outline, you can ask me to comment in advance.
In the essay, you can include a photo, map, or graph, etc. If you find you are running over 6 pages, that is no problem.
Here are some examples of where you can find lists of possible subjects to write about. The lists posted by Dr. Lee are an example of the wide range of choices.
1) History of probability and statistics
2) History of statistics, from Wikipedia
3) Dr. Peter M. Lee, University of York, UK, maintained some very interesting lists of many choices.
Portraits of Statisticians (notes on their lives and activities)
Life and Work of Statisticians
Some history of mathematics lists or websites may contain information that overlaps with the history of data analysis and statistics, and you might find some historical figures of interest in lists such as this.
After you choose a name, you could look up the basics on the person, such as this example:
and then add some details that you find regarding famous contributions or publications, or about the person's life, where they lived, when, etc.
