Question

A 76-year-old man presents with left-sided flank pain. He has a history of coronary artery disease and myocardial infarction eight years ago that was treated with two drug eluting stents. He also had a stroke one year ago with residual mild paresis of the left hand. He finally quit smoking last year after his stroke. The physician is concerned about the possibility of abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA). Which of the following statements regarding AAA are correct? The aorta may be palpated deep in the upper abdomen, slightly to the right of midline. Screening for AAA by ultrasound is recommended in all patients 65 years and older. Risk factors for AAA are age 65 years or older, history of smoking, and male gender. Rupture of AAA is 15 times more likely in AAAs >3 cm in diameter. If you cannot feel aortic pulsations on examination, it is very unlikely that this patient has an AAA.
