History 2270 - American History Research Project - Biographical Essay
The purpose of this assignment is for the learner to interpret, evaluate, and analyze sources to research a historical person.
Directions:
Step 1: Choose a historical person
Pick a historical person of interest to you who is significant to American history. Possible individuals will be discussed in class. It is highly recommended that you discuss your choice with your instructor prior to choosing the person.
Step 1: Research
Use the Buchanan Library online databases.
A minimum of 3 different sources should be referenced.
Step 3: Observation and analysis.
Provide an analysis based on your research that responds to the following questions*.
1. During what period of American history did the person live?
2. What were the major contributions or achievements of this individual?
3. What opportunities enabled this person to achieve success?
4. What obstacles or challenges did this person encounter?
5. Did these challenges interfere with or contribute to the person's achievements?
6. Were other individuals influential in this person's life? Identify these individuals and explain their influence.
7. Were the contributions of the person of a short-term or long-term influence?
8. Was the person influential in his/her own lifetime?
9. Provide APA references for all sources.
Step 4: Presentation of Findings.
Format
- The structure of the project will be as follows:
Title page
- Your name and Lethbridge College ID, title of paper, course name and number, instructor's name and date Observations and Analysis
- Use the questions from Step 3 above as headings, and provide an answer in paragraph format.
- Visuals such as pictures or maps can be included.
- Complete sentences with proper grammar, spelling, sentence structure, and paragraphs are expected.
- The analysis must be written in your own words using appropriate references and in-text citations.
Objectives:
- conduct research using primary and secondary sources.
- analyze material and clearly articulate their ideas.
- properly use and reference facts and ideas they have uncovered while conducting their research.
