Historical writing is often shaped by the political views of the author-this is especially true in histories of the 1970's. The chapter you just read is a major work on the 1970's by an important author. Schulman's personal opinion of Nixon is pretty clear even on the first page. But is Schulman fair to Nixon, historically speaking? In order to assess fairness, first try to figure out what Schulman is saying about Nixon (What is his main point? What does he want us to know about Nixon?). Then decide whether you think Schulman has the evidence to convince you that his views are solid. Is this good history? (You may also want to go ahead and read the lecture in the next lesson and consider how the discussion of Nixon in China challenges or confirms Schulman's depiction of Nixon).
