The nursing theory I chose is Hildegard Peplau's theory of interpersonal relations. In this theory, the development of therapeutic relationships between the nurse and patient is the focus. (n.d.) This theory is imperative in behavioral health because patients with mental illness are occasionally paranoid or have walls built up from a history of abuse. They often do not understand that they have a problem. Knowing how to approach a psychotic patient and therapeutically communicating is key to building a trusting nurse/patient relationship. After building that trusting relationship, the nurse can dig deeper into the problem and see what the patients' needs are and what the patient and nurse can do to meet those goals.
