Mental health treatment disparities include inaccessibility of high-quality mental health care services, cultural stigma surrounding mental healthcare, discrimination, and overall lack of awareness about mental health (ANA,2022). This is normally seen in underserved communities which are populated with ethnic, minority people. Citizens in a poor neighborhood are more likely to be undereducated about mental health and may not have access to health care to be diagnosed correctly and/or seek treatment. A psychiatric mental health nurse can face emotional stress when treating a patient who is non-compliant with medications or treating a patient who does not have access to transportation to be treated (ANA, 2022). Stress can also come from not being able to cure a patient of all symptoms and having to try different medications with a patient on a constant basis. Emotional stress increases the likelihood of medical mistakes and contributes to staff burnout and retention challenges. Relaxation and deep breathing exercises can be hugely beneficial for nurses who feel anxious.
