Question

The medication administration right I am choosing to give an example of is the right patient, because I have seen this in practice where health care professionals skip this step. I have seen in long term care facilities where there are two patients in one room the LPN's or RN's prepare meds for both patients at the same time and give it to them at the same time. Thankfully I haven't seen a mistake being made during this process but for example the RN or LPN giving the drugs could switch the medication cups by accident and give both patients who are in the same room the wrong medications. If patient 1 was prescribed high blood pressure medication and received a diabetes medication they could have an allergic reaction to that medication. They could also have a heart attack or stroke because they did not receive their high blood pressure medication. Patient 2 who didn't receive their diabetes medication but got the high blood pressure medication could also have an allergic reaction, and/or go into diabetic keto-acidosis (DKA) which can be fatal.
