In Chapters 6 and 7, you explored the helping process and integration of theory to practice. Recognizing that effective human service professionals have to not only develop skills but also gain self-awareness of the personal characteristics that may help or hinder client success are beneficial to the helping process.

The readings also discussed how human service professionals can use specific theories, or integration of multiple theories, in their work with individuals, families, and groups. Theories can provide helping professionals with a roadmap as to what to do and say when working with diverse clients. Starting from a point of self-awareness, helpers are better able to choose a personal theory of practice that aligns with values that were developed throughout the lifespan.

It is important that human service professionals have positive beliefs about people. Acknowledging what you might believe is important for the client may not be what the client wishes; it is imperative that you as the human service professional understand the client's cultural norms and apply appropriate strategies to assist the client. As a human service professional you will find yourself engaged in working relationships with diverse populations, so it becomes necessary to understand both you and the client's values in order to be successful at various stages of the helping process.
