Assignment 1 - Material Balance

A platinum wire of length 0.5m and diameter 1mm conducts a current of 10A. The ambient temperature is 20oC, and the heat transfer coefficient at the surface of the wire is 20 W.m-2.K-1. The thermal conductivity of platinum is 47 W.m-1.K-1 and the specific resistivity is 10.6 ??.cm. Calculate:

  1. (a)  The temperatures at the centreline and the surface of the wire
  2. (b)  The wire is coated with a 1 mm layer of plastic insulating material of km = 0.1W.m-1.K-1. Calculate the temperature at the inner and outer surfaces of the insulation.
