Heat and Mass Transfer Engineering Project

Problem

Dust and fumes are being extracted from various locations of a metal workshop by a multiple-hood system schematically shown in Figure 1. Commonly, such systems consist of a main duct run with individual branches joining the main at several locations. A centrifugal fan is being used to provide the air flow sufficient to meet the health and hygiene requirements applied to the quality of ambient air in the workshop. The face velocity of the air in the hoods was found to be ...... m/s and the cross- section area of each hood (measured at the inlet plane) is ...... m2. The aerodynamic resistance of the hood is approximately ...... Pa. The contaminated air carrier is purified by a plate scrubber before release to the atmosphere. Scrubber is equipped by four sieve plates and total aerodynamic resistance of the device is ...... Pa. The irrigation rate required for efficient operation of the scrubber is ...... m3/h

You are asked to design pipelines suitable for the application and choose the fan to meet the airflow and pressure requirements. The final document will have:

1. Scaled diagram of the system with all dimensions on it (top and side views).
2. All calculations required to determine optimum sizes of the air and scrubber irrigation pipes.
3. Recommendations on the type of the fan suitable for the application.

In addition, a common room at the facility is used by personnel for food consumption and resting (Fig. 2). An air conditioning system is required for providing comfortable temperature of 23°C. You are asked to select the room dimensions (X= m, Y= m and Z= m) and design a split air conditioning system suitable to meet the requirements for Brisbane climatic conditions. The room can accommodate up to staff members. The following kitchen appliances are used in the room: (for example) coffee machine, 2 microwaves, cooktop and dishwasher
