Healthy eating in childhood is important for proper growth and development and to prevent various health conditions. The Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommend that people aged 2 years or older follow a healthy eating pattern to help prevent obesity, type 2 diabetes, and heart disease. For academic performance, many studies have shown:
1. eating a healthy breakfast is associated with improved cognitive function, reduced absenteeism, and improved mood; and
2. Adequate hydration (important for learning) may also improve cognitive function in school aged children.
