Most healthcare occupations require face to face communication, effective teamwork, and a supportive climate. The major work climates can be divided into supportive and defensive. The characteristics of these climates are covered in most of our reading by exploring what produces effective communication and a positive workplace. A supportive climate is when there is an atmosphere of kindness, empathy, and helpfulness in the work place. For example, I am sure you have heard the adage that one bad apple spoils the bunch. Every patient can be pleasant and agreeable until one comes to offset all the other experiences and change an outlook on the day. This type of situation is an example in which nonverbal communication can be important. Perception during interactions is often based on nonverbal cues. Smiling is something that is difficult to do in a bad mood and it transcends the action itself, affecting emotion. The one thing that is important in a service industry like healthcare is to not let negative feelings become part of your communications with others, creating a defensive climate.
